The new initiative of the Schools of Political Studies of the Council of Europe, named “The Civic Roundtable”, started its journey in Berlin, on 2-4 May 2016. The program is based on the experience of the international seminars of Schools of Political Studies and the conviction that national challenges and responses to these challenges have causes and consequences that cross borders. Given this pan-European approach and international dynamics, these meetings will offer alumna and other young leaders a platform to study trends and challenges, and to build a network of colleagues in order to find ways to create a better citizen engagement across Europe and beyond.

The first meeting of this program took place in Berlin, with the participation of about 30 alumni and other young people. Among guest speakers in Berlin were Joschka Fischer, Ivan Krastev, Grete Brochmann, Daniel Gros, Branko Milanovic, Kalypso Nicolaidis, Claus Offe and Nathalie Tocci. The fellows discussed prospects of inclusive economic growth, trends related to inequality and social mobility, Europe’s role in the world, migration challenges and the associated changes to social capital and the social contract, and a European teleology which can help guide us into the future.

The second meeting will take place in Strasbourg from 16-17 June 2016 with the participation of other distinguished experts and politicians. The programme is run by the European School of Politics in Istanbul, in close co-operation with the Council of Europe and the network of Schools of Political Studies.
