ASPS national course on "Governance, Policies and Models of Development for a Sustainable Democracy" - Sarande 2012

On 25-26 May, the national course of ASPS on Governance, Policies and Models of Development for a Sustainable Democracy was organised in Sarande. The aim of this course was to generate a debate through which the participants would analyse the link between good governance models applied in economic development policies and democracy in the context of interdependent economies and globalization. Based on UN definitions and criteria for good governance participants examined several case studies and discussed the application of good governance approaches in Albania in respect of local self-government policies, solid waste management in rural areas etc. The module on Sustainable Regional Economic Development focused on the importance of regional development as a basis for a sustainable economic growth for the country.  Discussion with the participants followed on the impact of Regulatory Reforms and the Improvement of Business Climate on the development of the private sector and the overall business climate in Albania as well as challenges ahead from efficiency vs. democratic principles perspective. The fourth module of the course identified the challenges for public administration at central and local level in Albania and discussed with the participants on the ways forward.
